A 2012 survey reported that as many as one-third of U.S. This death narrative fostered a sense of crisis and cast serious doubts on the sustainability of print newspapers. print newspapers would disappear in five years - i.e., by 2016. In 2009, Time magazine published the list of “Ten Most Endangered Newspapers in America.” In 2010, Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., Publisher of The New York Times, said: “We will stop printing The New York Times sometime in the future, date TBD.” The Center for the Digital Future at the University of Southern California predicted that almost all U.S. This theme - or death narrative - has gone viral since the 2008 recession. Time for legacy media to rethink the whole thing, to drop wishful thinking about an all-digital future - before it is too late. Chyi has argued in many papers that the perception that print is in serious decline is both false and self-inflicted - that is, if media types would just stop saying print is dying, it wouldn’t be. That said…Chyi and I don’t agree on much when it comes to newspaper industry strategy, and I can’t say I agree with where she takes this interesting dataset from there. But this list looks about as logic-driven as ER pricing of pregnancy tests.) The Mercury News, which has thoroughly gutted its newsroom, costs $673 a year - more than twice the better-considered Tampa Bay Times? The San Francisco Chronicle is twice as expensive as the Star Tribune? The Las Vegas Review-Journal costs more than The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Wall Street Journal, or The Dallas Morning News? Pricing is a bit of a black box, of course, a mixture of actual costs, market strategy, and owner greed. (This isn’t Chyi and Tenenboim’s point, but having the data in one place makes it clear how deeply irrational some of these prices can seem when put in comparison with one another. Weekday single-copy prices went up even more, roughly tripling. But in general, these large newspapers increased their prices between 2× and 2.5×. The biggest price-hiker by a fair margin was the Los Angeles Times, who went from a quite-low $104 to about-what-you’d-expect-these-days $624 for a year of home delivery. Here’s the key chart from their paper (click to enlarge): Despite the increase in price, about two-thirds of print readers remained loyal to a product that has become much more expensive and is considered dying by many. Seven-day subscription now costs $510 a year - print subscribers are paying on average $293 more to have the same newspaper delivered to their doorstep. Seven-day home delivery price more than doubled, and weekday single-copy price tripled. The analysis documented industry-wide, more-than-substantial price hikes. Iris Chyi and Ori Tenenboim have done us a service in a new paper just published in Journalism Studies, measuring the rate at which all those prices have gone up - or at least went up between 20, the span they analyze - at 25 large American newspapers: Even accounting for inflation since then, a Post subscription now costs about 3.5 times what it used to. A year’s home delivery subscription to the Post cost about $130 back then. And kids, gather ’round while I tell you about how angry people were in 2001 when a copy of the Post went from 25 cents to 35 cents. As recently as 2013, a weekday Boston Globe ran you $1.25 and a Washington Post or Dallas Morning News cost $1. And if you’re in that dying breed of single-copy buyers at a newsstand or coffee shop, those four papers would cost you, on a weekday, $3, $2.50, $2, and $2.49, respectively. The Washington Post or The Dallas Morning News will each run you about $650. A subscription to The Boston Globe here in Cambridge will run you about $750 a year. If you’ve been a daily print newspaper subscriber for any length of time - whether it’s a seven-day morning habit you’ve had for decades or a Sunday-only New York Times subscription you have mainly so your four-year-old will sometimes see Dada reading something other than a screen :raised_hand: - you’ve noticed prices have gone nowhere but up.Ī seven-day print subscription to the Times will now run you over $1,000 a year in much of the country. ![]() ![]() ![]() Other annual support includes Greenbelt’s Labor Day Festival, National Night Out and a fundraiser for school supplies for Kids in Need. Sam: This has been a challenge like we didn’t expect. How did your previous business experience prepare you for starting Black Wolf? They really guided us through the process of making the products that we had a vision for. There was a full process making formulations and that’s where we learned about things like coconut extract and antimicrobials and activated charcoal and all the ingredients we didn't know. So Alex went down to Florida (he was 19). There was one manufacturer in Florida and we just hit it off right away. We compiled a big list and starting calling them. So we started googling natural skincare manufacturers in the States, literally googling. We decided to approach this from the perspective of our customers. We really had to figure it out as we went. I spoke to the brothers about how they started a business from scratch, what they’ve learned and, most importantly, why skincare. The products they developed are specifically formulated to address a variety of men’s skin needs like including charcoal for deep cleansing or leaving pore-clogging oil out of their moisturizer. Instead, they wanted to help guys like themselves to look and feel better, but didn’t know how to start. The idea to start a skincare line wasn’t because they had (any) experience in the beauty industry. It seems the secret is that, as the cliché goes, they’re also customers. Not bad for young guys with no formal business training. In fact, in the few times we’ve spoken since I first met them six months ago, they have sold out of product three times. Since the brand launched earlier this year with three products (a face wash, a moisturizing gel and a razor bump cream), the brothers have seen their sales double nearly every week. And it’s being led by innovative, direct-to-consumer brands like Black Wolf. The men’s grooming market is seeing rapid growth, estimated to reach $29.14 billion dollars globally by 2024. But 20 and 21, the brothers’ latest business venture, Black Wolf Skincare, isn’t about making a buck, it’s about providing a solution to a problem they had themselves: a lack of knowledge around how to care for their skin. Their ability to instinctually see a need, a market and an opportunity eventually led them from preteen toy resellers to full-on small business owners when they launched a car wash business in their native Montreal while still in high school. As early as age 12, the brothers were starting businesses reselling toys and sports jerseys to classmates. Not many people can call themselves serial entrepreneurs by their early twenties, but Canadian brothers Sam and Alex Lewkowict can certainly claim that title. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's really funny to see how exactly they go about trying to dispel demons on the phone.
